Fairbanks-Morse developed an opposed piston (OP) engine in the 1930's that
was utilized in submarines, and later diesel locomotives. This engine has two
crankshafts, one on the top and one on the bottom and each cylindar has two
pistons that come together at the same time. One of the most successful diesels
to use this this unique engine was the Trainmaster. 127 of these diesels were
built from 1953 until 1957. This multi-purpose road switcher was designed to
handle anything from mainline passenger service to yard switching.
The Jersey Central Fairbanks-Morse Trainmaster commemorates the refurbishment
and re-dedication of the Statue of Liberty.
