with Proto-Sound 2.0
The day is April 21, 1865 and the Civil War has just ended. The country lies in
mourning while the slain President's coffin leaves Washington, D.C. backtracking
almost the exact route he followed to Washington as President when elected four
years earlier.
Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, was
assassinated on Good Friday April 14, 1865. The President's coffin traveled home
in a special private car built for him while alive but never used until this sad
occasion. The funeral train traveled from Washington to Baltimore and on to
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It was headed by Pennsylvania Railroad Locomotive 331
and was draped in black.
Lincoln's coffin is moved to the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives
to lie in state. 40,000 people lined Harrisburg's streets when the coffin
returned to the depot to begin its journey to Philadelphia's Broad Street
Station. Public viewings were repeated in Philadelphia before the pattern
started over in Jersey City, New York, Cleveland, Columbus and Chicago. The
procession eventually arrived in Springfield on May 4th. On each cross over from
one railroad to the other the engine was changed and the train made stops at
every town along the way to give Americans a chance to pay their last respects.
