Before the SD70 MAC made its appearance at the beginning of the 1990's, the standard
for diesel engines was a DC traction motor. However, with more horsepower and
increased traction to the rails, AC power has become the more desirable
alternative.
General Motors' EMD railroad division received its first major bid from the
Burlington Northern (BN) which invested $675 million to make 350 SD70 MACs. In
December 1993, BN received its first MAC and ushered in a new era of diesel
motive power. Since then, the BN has merged with the Santa Fe to form the BNSF.
