The Fairbanks-Morse Consolidation Line engines - fondly known as C-Liners - were an enormously versatile class of cab units. Railroads had a choice of three engines, 1600, 2000, or 2400 hp, and nine gear ratios. Dynamic braking and steam generators were options at the factory or could be added later. These adaptable engines could be configured to perform just about any job, and they performed well in both freight and passenger service. Fairbanks-Morse offered the C-Liner in six horsepower-wheel arrangement combinations, all but one of which were eventually made.
