First offered by Lionel in 1948, the Santa Fe F3 has become a time honored classic. Its bold appearance and "war bonnet" markings are considered by many to be the most beautiful of all railroad paint schemes. Lionel thought it would be fitting to bring back the F3 made in the image of the very first one produced, complete with portholes, metal ladders and metal vents screens. In its highly touted years of service, the F3 delighted a many passenger as it glided to a stop in popular stations like the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal and Chicago's Dearborn station. Delivery of the "war bonnet" painted F3's began in 1946 and ended in 1953. By the late 1960's the red and silver began to fade as these great diesels showed signs of age. Eventually, F3's were replaced by or converted to CF7's.

This set came to us sealed in the shrink wrap from the factory. We opened it to test the A-units to make sure that all features work and that they run properly. These engines have not been run. For those that do not have a bell activation button on their transformer, a Lionel Sound Activation button is included. The pictures of the engines in this listing are from a prior set that we sold. The picture of the box is the item for sale here. We did not want to open the shrink wrap.
