Description

Lionel collectors, this is the rarest item that we have ever had to be able to offer for sale. There were only 3 of these large scale boxcars produced. This is from the collection of a long time Lionel employee, Randall Grescoviak, who worked for Lionel from 1976 to 2005. Randall was a draftsman, designer and graphic artist during his career at Lionel.

When Richard Kughn was owner of Lionel, he became friends with Roger B. Smith who was the Chairman of General Motors. When Roger Smith retired from GM, Richard Kughn commissioned a special boxcar to be presented to Roger Smith at a retirement party. Randall Grescoviak was the employee that was tasked with designing and producing the special boxcar. His instructions were to produce a pair of boxcars, one for Mr. Kughn and one to be presented to Mr. Smith. However, without anyone's knowledge, Randall also produced a 3rd boxcar that he kept for himself. Randall does not know what has become of the boxcars that went to Mr. Kughn and Mr. Smith as they are now both deceased.

There was not a specific box produced for this car but Randall found a random large scale boxcar box for it. It is labeled 8-87006 1989 CHRISTMAS CAR. The boxcar is in Mint condition and has never been on the track.

We are proud and honored to be able to offer this extremely rare part of Lionel history for sale.
