The original FA-2 prototype generated the equivalent of 1600 horsepower with its twelve cylinder 244 engine. It was first built in the early 1950s by Alco. The FA-2 Locomotive Engine is characterized by its flatnose cabs. The engine is also recognized by its Alco-GE grille seen around the headlight. There were passenger designated FA-2s that were built and identified as FPs, instead of just F. The FA-2 prototype was 53 feet 6 inches long, which is a couple of feet longer than the FA-1. This additional length on the FA-2 allowed for a steam generator compartment at the rear of the unit.
