Description

After a series of experiments with diesel-turbine power, the Union Pacific Railroad enthusiastically ordered 15 new ?Veranda? engines from General Electric, boasting 4,500 h.p. and over 83 feet of length. These new locomotives had one peculiar feature that would set them apart from the cab unit-type locomotives they resembled: exterior walkways ran from the cab to the rear of these units. People began to refer to them as ?Verandas? because of this porch-like feature, but don?t let the peaceful name give you the wrong idea?these massive locomotives were all about high fuel consumption, high horsepower and high noise levels. The Verandas burned staggering amounts of fuel in order to force compressed air through the turbine blades, and these powerful machines produced incredibly loud roars as the hot turbine exhaust escaped.

Complete with a die-cast auxiliary tender, the MTH Premiere Veranda features four powerful motors and is equipped with ProtoSound? Digital Sound. This model is rich in details, from the metal handrails to the cab interior. Two smoke generators and operating headlights bring this locomotive to life. You gotta get this tremendous turbine!

More on the Proto-Sound? system

To operate Proto-Sound?, just put your engine on the track - right out of the box. As soon as you power up your transformer, you will hear the authentic sounds of your turbine engine awaken as it waits your command to start moving. Your transformers throttle and its whistle button activate all the Proto-Sound? features listed above. There is no need to purchase a whole new control system with dozens of buttons and keystrokes to memorize. Proto-Sound? works with almost any AC transformer.

Your Proto-Sound? locomotive contains high quality digital sounds you have to hear to believe! Each diesel engine comes equipped with 8-levels of diesel (in this case, turbine) sounds, authentic horn and bell sounds, squeaking brakes, cab chatter and air compressor pump and let-off sounds.  Even while sitting still, a Proto-Sound? equipped engine sounds like it is alive and breathing - just like the real thing. Best of all, these sounds are controlled by the Proto-Sound? micro-processor, so they are randomly activated to prevent constant repetition and give Proto-Sound? owners a true-to-life sound experience.

Every Proto-Sound? equipped engine also features the exclusive Proto-Effects?, true-to-life sound and train control effects that make model railroading a unique and fun experience. Proto-Effects? sounds include squeaking brakes that, when activated, will pierce your ears as you throttle down the engine to stop or enter a turn. Imagine the fun of entering a station or switch yard, or even a curve after highballing down a straightaway and hearing the sound of your engine's brakes as you slow down. But there's even more! With Proto-Effects? you also get special sounds for your freight engine that you won't find anywhere else. When the Proto-Effects? are activated, your freight line engine will play special freight station sounds once the engine comes to a halt.

All of the Proto-Effects? and features, like the Proto-Sound? digital sounds themselves, are controlled through the Proto-Sound? microprocessor. This microprocessor gives the operator the ability to control an array of features remotely from any compatible transformer. The features include remote volume adjustment and remote engine lock-out control as well as perhaps the most exciting of all the Proto-Sound? features: remote control over your engine's coupler from anywhere on the layout. No additional wiring, uncoupling track sections or modifications to your layout are required. Each feature can be activated by simply using the transformer's whistle controller.

This engine is new in the box. We have upgraded the original NiCad battery to a genuine MTH ProtoSound NiMh battery for improved battery life and performance. We have tested the engine to make sure all features work and that it operates properly. Includes the box, packing materials and instructions.
