MTH Premiere Scale 20-2222-1, 20-2222-3 Milwaukee Road Alco DL-109 & DL-110 Diesels with ProtoSound?
|
Alco replicated Electro-Motive's plans to produce its first streamlined road passenger diesels by manufacturing a twin engine, 2000 horsepower unit. The DL-109 was powered by two, six cylinder turbocharged 539T series engines, each differed slightly from the DL-103b, DL-105 and DL-107 in external design. The major noticeable differences in outward appearance of these diesels were the number of headlights (one or two) and the nose treatment of the engine. (There were two sets of radiator grilles located next to each engine as opposed to being grouped at the back of the unit.) The DL-109 had extremely high gearing which made it able to attain a speed of 120 MPH. These diesel locomotives were designed by Otto Kuhler and appeared on the railroad scene in 1941.
While many railroads simply used 2 A-units back to back, there was in fact a B-unit of the engine, known as the DL-110. Like most B-units, these DL-110's did not have controls, but were powered boxes, which added another 2000 horsepower to the locomotive. The addition of the streamlined B-unit to the DL-109 not onlu doubled the engine's power but also made for a long, sleek locomotive which looked impressive and modern pulling its streamlined passenger consist.
